Day 5 of 2 Weeks 2 the Cross: Matthew 26:26-30

As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take and eat it; this is My body.” Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins. But I tell you, from this moment I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it in a new way in My Father’s kingdom with you.” After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Tonight we spread a blanket on the floor, cut a slab of homemade bread, poured a glass of juice and celebrated Communion.

My husband Matt took the bread and blessed it. He broke off pieces that he gave to each of us. We talked about what the bread symbolized, Jesus’s broken body, and how when we eat it, we must remember and thank God for His amazing sacrifice for us. Then we ate our pieces. Well, Lauren stuffed her large piece in her mouth and then tried to grab another. 🙂 We actually repeated this a few times because we each wanted a few more pieces as we talked about how much Jesus loved us and what he was willing to go through to save us.

Next, Matt picked up the cup and blessed it. We passed the cup around the circle and each took a sip, or in Jackson’s case several gulps (it was good juice). We discussed the blood Jesus shed on the cross as He died to take the punishment for our sins, and praised God for such a precious gift.

When Jesus and the disciples were finished celebrating Passover, the Bible says they sang and went out to the Mount of Olives. Jackson and Lauren thought we should sing “Jesus Loves Me,” so we walked around the living room and sang of the great love of our Savior.

As we held hands in a circle to close out our time together, this is what Jackson prayed:

Dear God,
Thank you for your body being broken and for your blood on the cross. Please help people to believe. Amen.

Thank you, Jesus!
